CARE AND USAGE
Since earthenware is porous, the ceramics are easily damaged if exposed to extremely hot temperatures, such as boiling water. Maiolica is low-fired earthenware and has a tendency to "craze" (form miniscule lines) with repeated use. This crazing is a part of the marvelous and unique nature of maiolica and does not have any significant effect on the piece itself. To reduce crazing, we recommend that you place a metal spoon in your teapot, mug, or ceramic vessel while pouring hot liquid to deflect some of the heat. Dishwashers vary and if yours has a low-energy/cool dry cycle, it is possible to use one and not encounter any adverse effects. After our extensive research, we're inclined to recommend that you periodically check your maiolica to see if the dishwasher has crazed the glaze. The ceramics are NOT safe for use in the microwave or conventional ovens.
We independently test all of our dinnerware lines and can assure you that they meet FDA standards for lead and cadmium, and comply with California's Proposition 65.
